Boygenius

Tonight I saw Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus (the boygenius tour) at Talia Hall. I've lightly edited the following but it's mostly what I jotted down at intervals. This was the second non-classical concert I'd been to in my entire life.

August 2019: I’m transferring these posts over to my Squarespace website from WordPress and it’s so interesting to read this one specifically because my relationship with the music I heard at this concert is much different now — I would say that Lucy Dacus is one of my favourite artists, and “Historian” (her second album) is in my top 5 albums of all time

I went with my lovely friend Madi, who sat upstairs in the balcony

got there at like 5:45, waited outside for 45 minutes in 30 degree weather, made friends!!

smoked a cigarette because I thought it would warm me up. it didn't. lesson learned, also it tasted awful

snagged a front row spot then went to buy a t-shirt and bought a lighter as well because it has phoebe's name on it and on the other side it says "f*ck the cops" and I think that's beautiful

45 minutes until the show starts

lucy dacus opened with a new song that she said probably won't be released for a long time and it was really good!!

her music!!!! her lyrics!!!! find that one about not being a creator or a leader because o m g it Spoke to me (song is “The Shell”)

also lucy's stage presence is just rly. calming. and she's so sweet and real and I adore her

hey sound guy can we change the levels so we can actually hear what she's singing maybe?

she's extremely underrated imo

phoebe is up next I s2g I will c r y I love her music

she ate a bag and a half of chips before coming out to perform I love her

she really sang an entire song with her ex, what a power move

phoebe threw me off because she looks so young and innocent (the headband! and she's tiny!) and then she's swearing and her ex messes up so she's like "is it too high? we'll do it in a lower key. k, we're starting over" and she's so in control and having so much fun and idk I lov her

I knew her music already, not super well but I'd listened a few times, and it's way better in person

I wanted to cry!!!! but my tear ducts would Not cooperate

I bought three more shirts because that's what being 22 is about, right? spending a little too much on merchandise from artists you really care about and will force your kids younger relatives to listen to in a few decades because you saw them live in your 20s and they were the best thing ever

julien is a gem

she was like "to give you awkward banter or awkward silence? I picked silence. probs should've prepared some banter"

she really just. knows who she is as an artist and is so! into! all of her songs which I think is so great

probably because she has fewer instruments, I can hear every word she sings

TIME FOR THE BOYGENIUS SONGS IM HYPE

oh. my. god. ohmygodohmygodohmygod they ended singing WITHOUT MICS and with one guitar and I'm. holy shit. I would die for these women.

my feet hurt and I'm hungry and tired and I'm so happy I did this
